What is the difference between TLC and colorimetric reagent tests?

Colorimetric reagents indicate the presence, so you can use them to confirm or exclude whether a sample contains a particular substance. Since there are many more possible substances than easily distinguishable colors the precision of the analysis is limited, even using a set of several different reagents.
A TLC (thin-layer chromatography) test shows the number and, if equipped with a calibrated concentration ruler, also the amount of components contained in a sample. In addition, TLC can help identify substances if a reference sample is available, even if, for example, ibuprofen or caffeine.
